Introduction

Buyers looking for a color LaserJet all-in-one with a 1200 x 2400dpi scanner might choose the Brother MFC-L3710CW.

The Brother MFC-L3710CW is a printer worth looking into if you need something for printing many copies of newsletters, papers, reports, and presentations and you want that crisp, flawless finish that only a LaserJet can provide.

Concept & Features

The capacity of this Brother is large—up to 250 A4 sheets.
The MFC-L3710CW weights 22.5kg as a whole.
Not as loud as you could anticipate when operating

Amazingly, the Brother MFC-L3710CW weights 22.5kg. You can begin to appreciate how insanely heavy the MFC-L3710CW is by comparing it to other printers like the 9.7kg Canon Pixma TS9550.

The MFC-L3710CW is a large, boxy, white device that is 414 x 410 x 475mm in size. The ADF (automatic document feeder) is located up top and is labeled with size recommendations for sheets that are A6, A5, A4, and Letter-sized. The scanner is just underneath, and it has a strong, double-jointed hinge that makes it simple to open and close. However, keep in mind that there is no slow-close mechanism present, so even if the lid is lightweight, if you are not careful, it could smash down.

Underneath this, the control panel protrudes into the room, and below that is the out-tray, which can easily accommodate 150 sheets of A4 at once. Below that is the large 250-sheet capacity paper in-tray, and below that is the tray you must open in order to replace the toner cartridges. Everything seems to be well-built and simple to use. The Brother MFC-L3710CW resembles a miniature version of your typical office printer both physically and aurally.

There is no getting around the Brother MFC-L3710CW’s size and weight. As a result, it may be advisable to keep it nearby your desk rather than on it. It isn’t particularly simple to move around, but there are tiny cavities cut into the sides and helpful pictures that illustrate where to grab the unit when picking it up.

After choosing your location, you can start setting it up by connecting the MFC-L3710CW to your home network using Wi-Fi.

This is made simpler by the fact that you can tap in your network password using an actual alphabet on the 3.6-inch touchscreen display on the control panel rather than having to cycle through letters and numbers like you would with some printers.

The menu is generally pretty well organized, and if you’ve ever struggled with a large office copier before, you’ll be familiar with how things work.

You also have the option of scanning to email, scanning to a mobile device, scanning to a cloud storage, scanning to an FTP server, and other options that may be useful to your business.

You’re ready to start after you’re connected and any necessary firmware upgrades have been installed. The MFC-L3710CW does not require the installation of any drivers because it is compatible with Apple AirPrint and the Brother iPrint applications for iOS and Android work right out of the box. Just add the device as usual in System Preferences, Printers & Scanners. To finish setup, Windows users can download drivers from Brother’s website.

Print quality and speed

Graphics and text in documents are extremely sharp.
The production process is swift.
The photo quality is only passable, and glossies cannot be printed on.

You can clearly see the advantages of a color laserjet printer in this situation. Since the MFC-L3710CW prints using toner, there is no risk of the paper bending or smudging under multiple coats of sprayed-on liquid ink. Everything appears to be quite clean, precise, and ready for handling.

Graphics like pie charts, bar graphs, and anything with large blocks of color look incredibly bold, and text in especially looks fantastically clear and well defined. Photos printed on standard A4 seem acceptable, but the Epson Eco Tank ET-2750 generated results that were more vivid and detailed.

Unfortunately, this is as good as photo printing gets because the MFC-L3710CW model I tested was unable to print on glossy photo paper. Glossy paper cannot be printed on using laserjets, contrary to conventional thinking, which is only partially accurate. You need to look for “laser ready” photo paper because most glossies are made to absorb ink, not toner, so you can’t just throw any old photo paper into a laserjet and expect it to work. In any case, this issue is irrelevant to the MFC-L3710CW because it lacks a multi-purpose in-tray for handling paper of different weights.

Apart from quality and media restrictions, the Brother MFC-L3710CW doesn’t mess around, which is fantastic news. It prints single pages of text in around three seconds, making it an extremely quick printer.

It took 19 seconds to print five pages of text (15.07 pages per minute), and 1 minute and 10 seconds to print 20 pages (17.10 pages per minute).

It took almost six seconds for a single slide from a color presentation with pie charts and graphs to appear on the MFC-L3710CW. While a large 20-page file took 3 minutes and 22 seconds (5.93 pages per minute), a five-page file took 32 seconds (9.49 pages per minute).

After a brief period of warming up, the MFC-L3710CW scans and copies documents as quickly as it prints them. A color photo scans in just under three seconds (2.51 seconds) while a page of text takes just over seven seconds (7.11 seconds). As anticipated, using the document feeder to scan and print a copy took a little longer; a color printout of a photo took 15 seconds while a copy of a single page of text took 14 seconds. This site does not allow auto duplexing, which is the automatic printing of a sheet of paper on both sides.

Regarding operating expenses, the picture is quite ambiguous. Even though the Brother MFC-L3710CW’s cartridges are pricey, you get much more use out of them than you would with a standard ink cartridge.

In other words, it will cost you about £230 to replace a complete set of cartridges. While that may raise a few questions, keep in mind that the average inkjet cartridge costs between £15 and £20 and only prints about 200 pages. The TN-243’s costs don’t appear that bad in this situation.

Higher-yield cartridges will cost more, but they will result in a lower cost per page if you have more money to spend:

Even if it’s highly inexpensive, that amount of money is a lot to spend up front. To put it another way, if you were mostly printing papers, you could merely purchase the more expensive color cartridges and leave the higher yield TN-247BK cartridge at home.

Do you want to buy it?

pros

An all-in-one printer is required.
This is a good option if you need a robust printer, scanner, and copier for your home office setup.

cons

You require a simple printer.
This printer is not for you if you don’t need a high-volume printer or wish to be able to print on glossy photo paper.

last thoughts

If you’re looking for a document printer for your home or small office, the Brother MFC-L3710CW is a wonderful choice. However, you would be better off going elsewhere if you wanted a more functional printer for the money that could also print images.
