When I first started truck driving, things were very different than now. We didn’t use a cell phone to contact dispatchers, freight brokers, or shop personnel. We had to go and find a pay phone in order to make the call.
I remember a time that I broke down and the batteries went dead on the truck. The closest pay phone was about a mile and a half away. So it was in the middle of the night so I had to walk there in order to make a call to the shop to get someone out there to repair the problem. If I had a cell phone I could have made the call.
At the time the satellite equipment on the truck wasn’t that good. And they couldn’t find where I was. So I had to walk back to the payphone to make another call so they could find where I was. If we had the technology then that we have now I wouldn’t have had to walk a mile and a half to just make a phone call.
Right now we have I phones where we can make calls. We even have technology that can pinpoint exactly where you are. Right now you can use a smart phone as a gps or you can send text messages and voice memos. Back then those technologies didn’t exist. There are different applications where we can watch videos or movies on our phones. We can even call each other in real time and do facetiming.
